National Hurricane Storm Surge Video

Wobbegon

NOAA's National Hurricane Center and Office for Coastal Management have worked in collaboration to produce a new video to raise awareness of storm surge.

Storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a tropical cyclone, yet many people do not understand the term or the danger it poses.  Hurricane evacuation in the U.S. are primarily based on storm surge, not wind.  Many forget that most of the damage and fatalities from tropical cyclones are results of the water and not the wind.  A mere six inches of fast moving flood water can knock over an adult.  It takes two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles including pickups and SUV's.

The new video uses a "fast draw" technique to explain the storm surge hazard in an engaging and interesting manner.
